Dubrovnik Producer Marcus stopped working with the last incarnation of the live ‘band’ to take a break and hit the refresh button .Since then the Dubrovnik sound has taken a deeper and more electronic direction , as can be heard on the current soundcloud mixes.
Blending elements:
DUB/HOUSE/BREAKS/ DEEP ELECTRONICA
An exciting fusion of electronic beats vocals, brass section, guitar, percussion, heavy bass-lines and live looping.
Origins
Dubrovnik’s producer Marcus began with Dub-Hop collective Dubmerge leaving to play with UK dub pioneers Zion Train. After three highly inspired years of touring the UK and Europe left Z.T. to focus on new work, build a new studio and with a bag full of instruments and ideas began to fill in a blank canvas with fresh sounds…
History
The current line-up of DUBROVNIK was formed in spring 2006, having performed at various club and festival shows since, producer Marcus has been tweaking the collective’s sound, much of which is documented in the debut album.
DUBROVNIK were offered their first gig at the internationally acclaimed Ashton Court festival, after the programmer for the event heard a CD of some very early DUBROVNIK music. Marcus promptly put together a band, and prepared for the big gig at Ashton Court. The gig was a stormer, the marquee was rammed and the party began — and so we now have a band!

Dubrovnik press/reviews:
Q: Dubrovnik consisted of a guy with a laptop producing beats and strange noises, a three piece horn section and the finest looking front-woman I’ve seen for a long time. She looked like a cross between Bjork and some blonde classic English beauty, dressed in a red skirt and fabulous red corset. Best all, she was not only a very fine singer but she smiled throughout the whole set and interacted with crowd. It’s always nice (but surprisingly rare) to see people on stage enjoying themselves.
Their musical style was a bit like a more sexually aroused, swaggering Groove Armada or a less pretentious, more party orientated Moloko. I’m not usually down with house music because it often seems quite monotonous in terms of beats, and also a bit soft, too – I always preferred breaks based music to rave to, like drum and bass for example. However, the combination of brass, clever arrangements and live vocals this lot served up was not only damn fine, but possibly the best dance music / live band crossover I’ve ever heard. I really appreciated the house influence in the long drawn out introductions, slowly building to a peak that makes every person in the room go mental.
So anyhow, if you’re the sort of person that even remotely appreciates events that you can have a jolly good dance at, go see Dubrovnik the next chance you get – you’ll thank me for it, honestly. I reckon they’ll be playing quite a few festivals next year and would look perfectly at home on one of the bigger stages at Glastonbury (the festival, not the town). Don’t say I didn’t warn ya………..
-Bristol Venue magazine December 2007
Q With origins in the heavy dub depths of Zion Train and Dubmerge, Dubrovnik know how to handle their bass levels. Add some warped beats, brass and a troupe of exotic dancers and you’ve got a full-on carnival of dub with lashings of electronica.
Dubrovnik’s debut album was released in the summer of 2006.
-The naked guide to Bristol 2006
Q: Its late Saturday night in a marquee packed with hedonists dressed as mermaids, cavemen and fairies, many squeezing through the masses to get down the front. Rocking it onstage, blending dub, house and electronica with carnival show girl dancers, one of whom is angle grinding her metal pants are Dubrovnik. Mashing up the place sonically, visually and with style; live vibed-up party music with deep excursions.
-Shambala festival 2005.
Q O.K, here the first of the myspace reviews. On a recent excursion to Bristol I was fortunate enough to catch these guys live.
Dubrovnik skillfully blend Dub, House and Electronica with vocals and live instruments to create a proper carnival mash-up.
The sequencer holds the fort whilst all manor of live business including a brass section, take things to the next level. These guys are definitely ones to watch out for in the New Year.
Visit the address below to check a couple of tracks, but they don’t do the live show justice so, if you can, get out there and see them my friends.
